Domschatz Essen

Museum/Exhibition

World-class works of art and impressive architecture
testify to the cultural past of our city
before industrialisation.
The Essen Cathedral was once the church of the Essen convent,
which existed from 850 to 1803. Today's 13th-century church combines Gothic architecture with older
Romanesque components and modern art.
The Essen cathedral treasure is one of the most important
church treasures in Germany. The world-class artworks created during the heyday of the cathedral - in the 10th and 11th centuries - include unique works of art such as the Golden Madonna (the oldest fully plastic sculpture of the Virgin Mary), the Seven-Branched Candlestick, the Essen Sword, the oldest crown of lilies in the world and precious recited crosses.
The exhibition provides an insight into more than 1000 years
of history, art and church life in the Ruhr.
