The Schurenbach spoil tip in Essen is one of the most recently re-natured spoil tips in the region, as it was only no longer needed in 1986 following the closure of the Zeche Zollverein (Zollverein coal mine) in 1986, and transformed into the "Waldpark Schurenbach” (“Schurenbach Woodland Park”). An extensive trail system on the Schurenbach spoil tip leads upwards on switchback routes and lets you climb to the summit. Numerous benches along the way invite you to stop a while and take a break. The American sculptor Richard Serra was commissioned to redesign the spoil tip and decided upon a striking sculpture in the middle of the spoil tip’s plateau. The rolled steel plate “Slab for the Ruhr Valley” is a monument to and symbol of the industrial heritage of the region. It is nearly 15 metres high, 4 metres wide and 13 centimetres thick.
